There's a fine line in superhero film making, one that production houses seem blind to. Its the literal translation, verbatim or an ignorant corporate mockery of a beloved franchise.
Fantastic 4 was the latter, Punisher War Zone is the first. Dude, the over the top dialogue... nobody actually talks like that! Oh Lord Baby Jesus, make them stop that shit grimey guinea lawng aisland accent. Blech! That's a reason I probably will never go to the east coast. And I'm all for gratuitous and graphic violence, but this shit is like out of a Tom Savini saturday night special! The implication of violence and gore can at times cause a greater effect to the viewer then actually showing it. All the visual effects shit is like college level at best too. They tried too hard to gett as much other random crap in here too, parkour, drugs, a Latin Kings drop?!!?
This flick made a hugely concerted effort to bring hundreds of pages of the insanely great series: The Punisher War Journal that lasted more then 20 years to 105 minutes of big screen, that NUKED THE FRIDGE!
My eldest son, ScreenTalker, jr understands superheros just as well as I do- even if he doesn't know all of a character's history- and he was as unhappy with this one as Spiderman 3.
btw... i love the fact that Sam Raimi purposely made it a crap movie...
5 outta 10 (as rated by ScreenTalker, jr)
