There's an entire era and genre of Trip Hop that came to light in the second half of the 90s and gained speed through major U.S. cities until about 2006ish.  Some of the more popular artist playing in America would be Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, Gorillaz and I'd even say Wu-Tang Clan and E-40 with their deep acid jazz and dubs.  Wu through the albums Wu-Tang Forever and, well.. most of E-40s music is heavy bass trip hop!
